What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese form of medicine that involves the insertion of tiny, virtually painless needles into points on the body. The points are located on specific energetic pathways or meridians on the body that relate to different organ systems. When Qi, or energy that flows through these meridians, becomes out of balance, disease, pain and stress can occur. Acupuncture works to realign the body back into harmony by stimulating these points and regulating the flow of Qi. Acupuncture is beneficial for the prevention and alleviation of many internal disorders, symptoms and pain.

What happens during an acupuncture treatment?

Before each treatment, your health will be evaluated by asking you questions about how you feel and your health history. Your pulse will be checked, not just to check its speed, but to judge its condition. Your tongue may also be examined, which by its color and texture can reveal much about your health.

After this exam, you will begin your treatment. Only disposable needles are used. The needles are as thin as human hair and are tapped in through a tiny tube. The needles are left in for 25 to 30 minutes while you relax. Most patients go into a state of deep relaxation and some even fall asleep due to the endorphins that are released during the treatment. Herbal supplements may be recommended to support your treatment.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture is a very gentle procedure. However, sensation at the acupuncture point is common and often necessary in order to achieve the therapeutic goal. Overall, most people find it to be an extremely relaxing and comfortable procedure.
